CRAFT DISTRICT
Wenatchee, Washington
Bordered by the Columbia River and the Cascade Mountains, Wenatchee sits within one of the most climatically diverse regions in the country. Volcanic soils, long hot days, and early industrial ingenuity supported ideal conditions for a booming fruit industry that shaped the region’s growth and identity as “The Apple Capital of the World”. With the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in the late 1800s, Wenatchee expanded rapidly. Today the city faces new pressures as its population grows and priorities shift toward recreation, tourism, and urban development. Through collaboration with Forte Architects and the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority, Craft District transforms a fragmented stretch of Columbia Street, once the center of Wenatchee’s treefruit warehouse and rail economy, into a revitalized pedestrian corridor that responds to the city’s evolving needs.
The adaptive reuse of one of the first fruit cold storage warehouses on Columbia St. sustainably honors agricultural heritage while creating a contemporary setting for gathering, making, and community life. The site is envisioned as a lively, open, and adaptable landscape that transforms from a calm, shaded setting for morning meetings and conversation to a vibrant evening social hub animated by dining, markets, and events. Layered plantings reflect the texture and resilience of the valley’s surrounding shrub-steppe landscape while flexible furnishings and infrastructure support a wide range of uses, from small gatherings to large community celebrations. Together, these elements create a place that honors Wenatchee’s past while embracing its future as a dynamic public space for everyday life.
Craft District is located on the traditional homelands of the P’squosa (Wenatchi) people.
This project was designed in collaboration with Forte Architects and the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority as an adaptive reuse project, creating a new flexible public space in the heart of downtown Wenatchee.
